After a period exceeding thirty years we recommenced athletics at the club this year. We currently have a squad comprising of five athletes; three senior and two junior, a coach and a trainer. Two of our athletes were selected for the South Asian Games in Bangladesh and both were successful in their events. We have also obtained membership of the Colombo District Athletics Association which means that our athletes can now represent the Tamil Union and Athletics Club.
Ashan Hasaranga won a Gold Medal in the men's 100 meter relay event and Prasanna Amarasekera won two Silver Medals; in the men's 400 meter and 400 meter relay events. Both having attained first place in their individual events at the selection trials held recently have been selected for the Sri Lanka National Athletics Pool for the Commonwealth Games to be held in Delhi in September 2010 and the Asian Games to held in China in November 2010.. Our juniors have also been successful at the Junior National Championships held recently. In the Under 20 category Isuru de Soyza won first place in the 400 meter event and in the Under 18 category Thimesha Hewage was placed third in the 100 meter event. This moots well for the future of athletics at the club. Furthermore Isuru de Soyza has also been selected for the Junior Asian Athletics Games to be held in Vietnam in August 2010. In order to carry on this successful trend in the newly reawakened Athletics section we are now looking for sponsorships. Our Athletes can now be sponsored individually for a season or specified races as you wish. They will be happy to carry the Club logo in addition to your personal or Company logo.
We have also purchased equipment to hold athletic meets at our Grounds when they are not booked for Cricket matches. This means that schools and private companies can now have their sports days at the Tamil Union.
Badminton continues to be a success story at the Club with members, their guests and families increasingly using the facility and as a result the courts tend to be heavily booked throughout the week. Average monthly revenue from the two Badminton Courts now exceeds Rs 100,000.
We are also proud that 18 year old Dilshan Kariyawasam from our Badminton School will be the only badminton player to represent Sri Lanka at the Youth Olympic Games to be held in Singapore in August 2010.

It has been a remarkably good year for cricket at the club. The meticulous planning and development of our cricketers in the last few years has paid rich dividends and this was highlighted by the club winning a major tournament after ten years.
Under the leadership of Sajith Fernando our talented team won the Premier Limited Over Tournament by beating Chilaw Marians in the finals. Our team was felicitated to a Champions Night at the club and were given mementos to remember the occasion by. In the Premier League, as in the previous year, we were placed sixth due mainly to a number of our cricketers being called up for Sri Lanka squads during the season. Jeevan Mendis was adjudged best all rounder in both forms and Sachithra Serasinghe was adjudged the best batsman in the Limited Over Tournament.
The Under 23 team achieved a milestone by being the first in the history of our club to tour Malaysia at the invitation of the Malaysian Cricket Association. In the Limited Over Tournament, having been top of the table, they were unfortunate to lose in the Semi Finals to Bloomfield on the Duckworth Lewis System. In the three day format we were placed fourth.

All this was achieved without the club having a cricket sponsor this year. All credit to the Chairman of the Cricket Committee Dinal Philips, Secretary Dilipa Wickremasinghe and Coach Lanka De Silva for their professionalism and perseverance which has enabled cricket at our club to advance this far in such a short period of time.
Our rehabilitated and upgraded Gym; managed by Pacific Sports, was opened in April 2009. In the ensuing period we passed the 100 member figure which was very encouraging. Pacific Sports are in the process of adding more equipment to cope with the increased demand and also there are plans to start aerobic classes in the near future. We have two dedicated male supervisors and a female supervisor to assist members with their training needs and our Club trainer is also available for individual training programmes.
Refreshingly there has been more usage of the squash courts mainly because of the National Squash Federation who have made this their headquarters. We are currently discussing with them the possibility of starting The Oval Squash Academy which should bring in larger numbers of younger players and also increase the usage of the courts. The Club continues to host the Janashakthi Open Squash Tournament, which is a ranking tournament of the National Squash Federation.
The Swimming Pool has also had more usage from the members as we now offer swimming pool membership free when members renew their subscriptions and also for new members. This promotional offer has worked well for the club and we hope this trend will continue. We started The Oval Swimming Academy this year which is managed by our coach L.V.Fernando.This has been a considerable success and we now have 43 registered students in the Academy. In addition we also have 2 private coaches and 5 schools utilising our pool facilities and this has also helped generate important revenue from the swimming pool.
In the All Island Public Schools Swimming Championships there was also considerable success for student members of the Club who are undergoing training at our Swimming Pool. In the Under 11 boys category Shivaji De Silva was placed first in the 50 metres Free Style and 50 metres Back Stroke events and also was placed second in the 100 metres Free Style Event. In the same category Kavin Weerasinghe was placed second in the 200 metres Individual Medley event and third in 50 metres Dolphin event. In the Under 9 boys category Dinal Weerasinghe was placed first in 200 metres Individual Medley event and second in both the 100 metres Free Style and 50 metres Dolphin events.
The Tamil Union Tennis Section presently comprises approx 18 active Tennis playing members. With two courts available to the members, the tennis playing section is patronized every day (weather permitting) from 4:30pm to 6:30pm for Social Tennis. Members are offered the courts on a first come first served basis with Doubles the game of choice.
The Tamil Union Over 55s have been for more than a decade one of the strongest seniors teams in the Country. In the year under review they entered two events and were successful in reaching the finals in both. They took the Runners up Trophy in the singles event and the Champions Trophy in the Doubles event.
The clubs strongest team is the Open Division 4. This team has been runner up for the last four years in a row in the doubles competition and this year was no exception losing to SLTA in the grand final match. The singles competition was a little tougher however but they did well to reach the Semi Finals.
In September 2009 the tennis section welcomed the first official corporate tennis sponsor in Royal Sports (Pvt) Ltd who sponsored all the tennis balls from September 2009 till September 2010.
The tennis section is in the process of implementing some ambitious projects to develop and expand tennis playing facilities at the Club and bring in new members commencing at junior level. In order to achieve this, planning has commenced to build a new court solely dedicated to coaching which should be completed by the third quarter of 2010.We are also in the midst of negotiations with a tennis coach to set up the Oval Tennis Academy at the club. The academy will bring new junior tennis playing members to the club and also provide the opportunity of hosting junior tournaments. We aim to launch the academy after the new court has been built. The final development planned is to commence night tennis. We are in the process of procuring sponsorships for this development and are hopeful to have the finances raised by the end of 2010.
All this we hope will enable us to increase tennis membership, raise revenue for the club by holding tennis tournaments and also bring in more sponsors for the tennis section.
